Building Stronger Communities has been written by Philip Hughes, Alan Black, Peter Kaldor, John Bellamy and Keith Castle and published by University of NSW Press. The book is an accessible handbook for all people involved in building communities. An underlying theme is that our society has changed and, for many of us, our experience of community is fragmented. We find our communities primarily in the locality where we live, but increasingly through a wide range of contacts through common interests and tasks. Within this context, we must approach the formation of community in different ways. Developing the language of social capital, the book looks at ways of strengthening the relationships of bonds, bridges and linkages as well as building community relationships through motivating, skilling and engaging people. The book considers how both local communities and communities beyond the locality can be strengthened. A study guide for the use of churches is being prepared and will be available in July 2007. The study guide will focus on churches as communities and on churches relating to the communities in which they are situated. To purchase a copy go to the CRA's online shop.
